There are eight international airports in the Dominican Republic including two in Santo Domingo. Maria Montez International is located in Barahona and serves flights from San Juan, Puerto Rico. La Romana is adjacent to the town of La Romana, a known tourist town. Most flights into this airport come from Canada or Europe but American Airlines and Miami Air also serve this airport.
Airports
Puerto Plata boasts the country's third largest airport, Gregorio Luperon International Airport, with destinations all over the world. Saman El Catey International is one of the country's newest and serves the city of Samana with primarily Canadian and European airline service. Cibao International is owned by the city of Santiago and not only takes international flights, but also domestic and charter flights. The city of Santo Domingo has two international airports, La Isabela International and Las Americas. La Isabela is the major hub for Dominican Airlines. Las Americas has two passenger terminals, a domestic terminal, and a cargo terminal.
Airlines
There are fourteen airlines that serve the Dominican Republic. These include Aeropostal, Air Canada, Air Caraibes, American Airlines, British Airways, Continental, Delta, Iberia, Jet Blue, Martinair, Northwest Airlines, and US Airways. Most of them fly into Puerta Plata and/or Santo Domingo. Continental also flies to Santiago, Martinair serves Punta Cana, and United Airlines flies to Casa de Campo. For other destinations within the country, you can use a domestic airline or charter a flight. Also, the Dominican Republic is not a large country so renting a car and driving from one place to another is not only practical, but also enjoyable since this island nation is breathtakingly beautiful.
Other Money-Saving Tips
The high season for travel to the Dominican Republic is the winter months starting in December and going until March, similar to most other Caribbean islands. This is in part because people want to escape the winter cold in their own countries and partly because the hurricane season runs from June until November. From mid-April until the high season prices can drop dramatically. As an added advantage, some of the country's most delightful festivals are in the low season. There are carnival celebrations in both April and August, and the Meringue festival spans the last week of July to the first week of August.
