Getting to Indonesia

Continental and American out of the U.S. fly to Indonesia, as do many major airlines in many countries. Flights from neighboring countries often stop in cities in Indonesia and visa-versa, so your trip to Indonesia could be multi-faceted. The primary gateway to Indonesia is Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, but Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport is fast becoming a favorite alternative.

Airports

The islands of Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, Papua and the Lesser Sunda Islands all have numerous regional airports, while the first four islands listed here also have international airports with scheduled service to neighboring countries. Indonesia and any close neighbors are easily navigable and fairly inexpensive to fly to with visas available at the airport for short visits to any other country in Asia.

Airlines

Indonesia is host to 35 domestic carriers issued an Air Operator Certificate by the Civil Aviation Authority of Indonesia. The largest of these carriers have scheduled service out of and between the largest airports. These are Airfast Indonesia, Airmark Indonesia, Eastindo, Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air and Linus Airways. Garuda is the national airlines and has the most scheduled flights, but you will find that all of the domestic flights are very reasonably priced. Linus, Lion, Garuda, Airfast and Airmark also service close neighboring countries and therefore have scheduled flights out of the international airports.

Other Money-Saving Tips

As is true of any extended vacation, pre-planning will result in the largest cost savings. The second determining factor is usually the weather. Indonesia's weather can be divided into two seasons: wet and dry. The wet season is typically between October and April. It doesn't differ much in temperature, as being on the equator insures the temperatures stay fairly constant, but the wet season can deter back road travel and affect plans to travel between islands by ferry. It will usually not rain all the time, but tropical downpours are frequent and some times it will rain for days at a time. The dry season, May through September, are the favorite times to travel to Indonesia, but traveling then will result in higher costs and more congestion. Flexibility is key to saving money. Fly during the week, rather than on weekends and flying during unattractive hours will guarantee a less expensive flight. Hotels are greatly reduced during the wet season and if you are willing to change plans to accommodate rainy weather, you will find the best deals then.
