Cocos (Keeling) Islands Visa
US citizens who have an intention to travel to Cocos (Keeling) Islands either as tourist or business travelers are required to secure a visa and carry a valid US passport. As Cocos (Keeling) Islands is a territory of Australia, travelers are required to secure an Australian visa. Eligible travelers from the United States may apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) that has a maximum validity of three months. ETA can also be secured through selected airline companies and travel agencies in the United States, which are authorized to apply for ETAs in behalf of travelers. Travelers with ETA may be subjected to exclusion, detention, and removal if they overstay even for a short period. US citizens who would like to apply for ETA or any Australian visa may apply at the Embassy of Australia at 1601 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20036, telephone (202) 797-3000.
US citizens whose trip to Cocos Islands does not exceed three months may apply for a tourist visa and submit a valid, signed US passport with a validity of at least three months. On the other hand, a business traveler who plans to stay up to three months in the islands should submit a business letter of responsibility aside from the usual visa requirements. The letter must explain the purpose of travel and enumerate the duties to be performed by the visa applicant. It should also guarantee financial support for the visa applicant during his stay. If the visa applicant is attending a conference, a copy of the invitation may be submitted in lieu of the business letter of responsibility.
