Sri Lanka Visa
Citizens of the United States may
enter Sri Lanka
as tourists without previously securing a visa. No-cost landing/tourist visas are issued upon arrival and allow holders a maximum stay of 30 days. Travelers must present a valid passport, a return/onward ticket, and proof of sufficient funds. These landing/tourist visas cannot be converted to non-tourist visas, and tourists may face deportation if found engaging in activities other than tourism without the proper visa.
Foreign nationals who wish to
enter Sri Lanka
for purposes other than tourism (including volunteering, working, or performing religious work) must secure the appropriate visa prior to their
arrival in Sri Lanka.
Business travelers from the United States can apply for a business visa by submitting their U.S. passport with at least six months of validity beyond the entry date, a completed application form, two passport-size photographs, proof of return, and a business letter of responsibility from the sending company in the United States. Said letter must be typewritten on company letterhead, addressed to the Visa Section of the Embassy or Consulate of Sri Lanka, and signed by a senior manager with rank equivalent to vice president or higher. It should introduce the applicant and state, among other things, the nature of the business to be conducted, the type and desired validity of the visa, and a guarantee of sufficient funds for travel.
Travelers
staying in Sri Lanka
for more than 30 days for any purpose must apply for a visa extension with the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo.
