Close to five million families of 17 species of seabirds roost on the islands, including two million albatross of the Laysan and Black-footed variety. 80% of the world"s living Laysan albatrosses are found at Midway. They are locally known as the "gooney bird" for their clumsy manner of landing, especially for their amusing mating rituals. Endangered Hawaiian monk seals (7-8 feet, up to 500 lbs) pull themselves ashore to rest and to give birth and raise their cubs. Giant green sea turtles of up to 400 lbs are frequent visitors of the island. They have lately been filmed nesting on Midway"s beaches. There is also a visible population of spinner dolphins in the area.

Midway Island also hides memorials and artifacts of the Battle of Midway in 1942. To this day you can see the original Cable buildings put up in 1903.
