Lisbon Portela Airport, a.k.a. Lisbon Airport (LIS) is located just a little more than three miles north of Castle of Sao Jorge in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. You may still experience a little inconvenience as finishing touches are made to a major refurbishment started in 2007. Completion of all aspects is expected in 2010. The Lisbon airport will eventually be replaced by an airport in Alcochete, only 22 miles from Lisbon and in an area that is not as congested, the main reason for relocating. Plans were set in motion 35 years ago and final approval for Alcochete was not received until 2008. Be aware of this upcoming change, but don't change your travel plans. No ground-breaking date has been announced.
