Riga International Airport (RIX) is located around 13 km southwest of Riga and is the principal airport in Latvia (67 direct destinations and 18 operating airlines). Reconstruction and modernization of the airport was completed in 2001, coinciding with the 800th anniversary of the founding of the capital. The new north terminal extension was opened in 2006.
