Travel Guide to Zurich

Cheap Flights to Zurich

Zurich's reputation has taken a beating at times. It's hard to live down the fact that Zurich is home to the fourth biggest stock exchange and she remains a HUGE financial center, world-renowned for her banking laws and the rich and famous people that hid their assets in Switzerland, but Zurich is also an absolutely beautiful city. She sits on the banks of a beautiful river and a pollution-free lake whose water you can safely drink. You can walk among the affluent or get down and dirty with the trendy bar crowd. A fashion template, it is quite obvious that Zurich's residents enjoy the finer things in life. To really get a feel of the affluence of this remarkable city, just wander down the Bahnhofstrasse. It is said that the bank vaults below the street are jam-packed with silver and gold bouillon, while the luxurious shops above ground feature just about anything your heart desires, if you can afford it. This is also the one place you can almost be guaranteed to spot a celebrity from one country or another. Literary buffs will want to visit the Fluntern Cemetery. James Joyce took refuge during World War II and penned Ulysses, one of his greatest works, while here. He was buried in Fluntern Cemetery in 1941. The amazing architecture of her churches and Zurich's appreciation of the arts also makes her a cultural treasure trove. While here visit the Beyer Museum, the Cabaret Voltaire, the 13th-century Fraumunster and the dual-towered Grossmunster right across the river. You will never look at Zurich as a stuffy financial capital again!

Zurich is the most popular in winter, though her tourism is active year round. Booking in advance will always net you the cheapest fares, as will those fantastic package deals offered by numerous hotels, airlines, rental car agencies, and the ski resorts. Edelweiss Air, by far has the most flights from the most departure cities around the world. Zurich is such a popular destination, that you might want to check your regional low cost carriers for flights before looking to one of the larger airlines. EasyJet will be your best bet from either London-Gatwick or -Luton. Swiss International Airlines covers the lion's share of flights from just about any major city in the world, so don't rule them out. Be sure to assess the 'additional fees' for baggage, drinks, meals, and even airport fees to cover new construction or security. Read the fine print to figure the total cost, as many of these fees are not included in the ticketed price, being collected at the airport check-in counter. They can be an unpleasant and costly surprise.
