Xiamen enjoys the distinction of being one of China's four earliest Special Economic Zones (SEZs). Its being a center for high economic growth is not a surprise when one considers that Xiamen was one of the earliest cities to be inhabited by immigrant Chinese. Called Amoy in the native tongue, it is today a bustling port city of more than two-and-a-half million people. In 2006 this city, located in the Fujian province of East China, was named the nation's second most suitable city for living, beating even Beijing to the post. Keep Xiamen on your itinerary because this city has consistently remained in the top 30 of the world's 100 ports. All this gives you another reason for buying cheap flights to Xiamen.

With all this development and modernization comes its rich tradition. Xiamen is a repository for oil painting and four-fifths of the oil painting market in Europe and the US comes from here. It is home to two oil painting villages, Xiamen Wushipu Oil Painting Village and Xiamen Haicang Oil Painting Village.
