Major Airports Serving Hiroshima

Hiroshima Airport (HIJ) is the located in Mihara City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan and is the newest Hiroshima Airport opened in 1963. It has only one runway and is the biggest airport in the Chogoku region. HIJ serves both domestic and international flights from airline companies such as Air China, All Nippon Airways, Asiana Airlines, Bangkok Airlines, Bangkok Airways, Continental Airlines, China Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Japan Airlines. It connects to various cities in Japan such as Tokyo, Sapporo, Narita, Sendai and Okinawa and has direct flights to Bangkok, Beijing, Dalian, Guam, Shanghai, Seoul and Taipei. The airport is accessible through the JR Hiroshima Station by airport buses which also travel to Okayama, Onomichi, Iwakuni, Tottori and other places in the Chogoku region.

Hiroshima-Nishi Airport (HIW) is located in the Nishi Ward in the city of Hiroshima, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. It also has only one runway whose size was at 1200 meters but was extended to 1800 meters to accommodate more flights. In 1963, when the new Hiroshima Airport was opened, this airport became the Hiroshima Prefectural Hiroshima-Nishi Airport. The basic and detailed design of the airport won an award which was given, in part, to the Japan branch of The Austin Company. The airport serves Japan Airlines and Japan Air Commuter.

More Information on Hiroshima

During the Second World War, Hiroshima was the first city to be bombed by a nuclear weapon by the United States on August 6, 1945. The city is along coastal areas and had been a port city where goods were transported. There are many sites to see in Hiroshima including the Peace Memorial Park which was mostly destroyed by the bomb and where the remains of the A-Bomb Dome still remain to date. All other memorabilia regarding the bombing can be found in this place and in museums outside the park. There are also many castles and temples around Hiroshima that are worth a visit.
