You will not run out of things to do in New Orleans! There are books written on the subject! Often referred to as 'the northernmost Caribbean city', New Orleans marches to her own drummer-and you can hear that beat wherever you go. The destruction of Hurricane Katrina has mostly given way to new construction and the areas along the river, the most popular areas to visit, were not flooded when the levees gave way and are now again raucous with the city's joyfulness and exuberance, New Orleans' trademark. Indeed, the city's unofficial motto is: Laissez les bons temps rouler, French for 'Let the good times roll.' Though the population has been halved, the tourist trade is alive and reviving, welcome news to the business operators and residents of this city who won't let a little hurricane or flooding beat them down. New Orleans has more than 90 sites that are on every tourist's radar. Galleries, museums, nightclubs, and amazing eateries abound here! Fantastic architecture is down every street and on every corner, but the Beauregard-Keyes House stands alone. Built in 1826, it is a Greek-revival structure, quite uncommon in the Quarter. The Confederate General, Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard, who is famous for commanding the first shots during the Civil War at Fort Sumter in South Carolina, lived here for 18 months. Then, famous author, Francis Parkinson Keyes lived here from 1942 until her death in 1970. She penned 51 novels while living here and most of her works are available in the gift shop. And, if you chose not to spend the tons of cash to come during Mardi Gras, you can still see some of the world-famous floats at the Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras World. Across the river from the French Quarter in Algiers Point, the best of the best floats have been made and stored here. Blaine Kern is lovingly known as 'Mister Mardi Gras'-he has been making parade floats since 1947 and this exhibit was his brainchild. And Bourbon Street-whose reputation is infamous-where bars galore are filled with revelers, both locals and tourists alike and a 'must-see' at least once for any visitor to this amazing city! There is plenty to do here for couples, oldsters and family groups-you don't have to look far to find it!
It is recommended that you book your flight into and out of New Orleans early. Almost every flight is at or near capacity, upon departure, so booking early will help you to get those few seats that are offered as online rates or as an incentive to make early reservations. A number of low cost carriers, such as Southwest, US Airways, AirTran Airways, JetBlue, and Northwest Airlines have regularly scheduled service to and from major US metropolitan areas. Southwest has the most options, flying from Baltimore, Birmingham, AL, Chicago-Midway, Dallas-Love, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Houston-Hobby, Las Vegas, Nashville, Orlando, Phoenix, St. Louis, and Tampa. Northwest flies from Detroit, Memphis, and Minneapolis/St. Paul, and New York-LaGuardia. Beware the additional fees that have become common with air carriers in order to survive during this tough economy. Read the fine print and be sure that you know if those fees are included in your ticket prices or will be assessed at check-in at the airport. Baggage fees are handled this way and can be a most unpleasant surprise. Southwest does not charge for the first two checked bags, so be sure to include this as you shop and compare. If you plan to be here for Mardi Gras, you will have to book close to a year in advance and be prepared to pay exorbitant prices for lodging, meals, and transportation.

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) is a hopping place! As New Orleans is a 'go-to' destination, flights in and out of here are often booked solid and the airport is full to almost over flowing. Ground transportation is readily available. A taxi costs USD$33.00 from the airport to the Central Business District (CBD) for one or two people. You can share a cab for USD$14.00 per person for three or more. Taxi services are available on the lower level of the baggage claim area. An extra charge may be assessed for additional baggage. An Airport Shuttle also operates to and from the hotels in the CBD and costs USD$20.00 per person one-way or USD$38.00 per person round trip. There is a limit of three bags per person with a charge for additional bags. Trains are not an option from the airport, though Amtrak and the Coastliner/Mississippi Coast Service have train service from the downtown station. Busses are also an option and the cost is only USD$1.10 from the airport to the CBD. Much of New Orleans is accessible on foot once you reach the CBD and your hotel, but if you prefer to rent a car, Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Thrifty, Airport Shuttle, Jet, Dollar, and Advantage all have rental counters on the lower level of the airport.
